Back to the dojo today! For the two-hour afternoon session of our semi-annual Friendship Training. Nice to see everybody again, and get back on the mat and see that I can still do it all (I got wiped out just doing the basics class on Wednesday). I trained the first hour doing knife takeaways with a friendly teacher from Monterey who also teaches jiu-jitsu, so he's aware and ready to do all sorts of meaner things that we don't normally do in aikido--squeezing knuckles, bending back fingers, etc. All good fun.
Having sorted out a few boxes of books to get rid of (probably tomorrow), I've been violating the moratorium on acquiring more stuff. I finally got a copy of 69 Love Songs, a sublim concept album by the Magnetic Fields that most of us can only aspire to. Imagine the following set to quiet, catchy, lovingly sweet music:
The book of love is long and boringOr the line "Since you've been away / it's been raining all day / and it's usually raining too." Who writes that? It's brilliant. I don't know how long it will be until I know all the songs well; probably quite a bit. SlimServer and my Squeezebox really feed my music ADD, making it easy to flip around between different stuff.
No one can lift the damn thing
It's full of charts and facts and figures
and instructions for dancing
but I
I love it when you read to me
and you
you can read me anything
