Every now and again I read something, like this biography of John Ashcroft, and I think that if we make it through this, in forty or fifty years, if the honest historians haven't been executed as traitors to the State...I think this will go down as one of the darkest periods of American history. Not for the danger we're supposed to be in, or for the attacks of September 11th, but for what we've done to ourselves.

It's worth reading to the end of the article, though. Who knows?
